In the United States, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. The day was created in 1949, and was a result of the consolidation of the military services in the Department of Defense. It was intended to replace the separate Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Days, but observance of these days, especially within each particular service, continues to this day.
So why am I mentioning it today instead of waiting until Saturday? Because I think we need to spend more than ONE day thinking about and thanking those who do so much for us……. the sacrifices they and their families make…. on a daily basis….
Forget about about the politics….. these are families like you and me….. that have answered the call…to defend our freedom….
My challenge (request) to each of you this week (and perhaps in the future)….when you see someone in a military uniform while you are out and about…. take the time to stop him/her and tell them “Thanks”… you’ll be surprised to find how good it makes you feel!
Susan,
ReplyDeleteThis was a very commendable post. I think you are really going to light a fire under us all to honor and remember all the brave souls serving our country. Thank you for the reminder!
xoxo

THANK YOU! ! ! Not only how good you may feel, but how it makes them feel. When I thank one of them, I always get a beautiful smile and a great response from them.

Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great challenge Susan! There is a military base in my town, so I will have lots of opportunities to thank these heroes!!! :D Jewel
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Susan. Thank God for those brave men and women!
ReplyDeleteJustine :o )
We NEED to tahnk them EVERYDAY of the YEAR for keeping us SAFE!
ReplyDeleteSusan, I loved this post. I am a military mom and mother-in-law. These men and women are so worthy of our gratitude. I hope everyone realizes the sacrifices they make to protect our country. Hugs, Terrie
ReplyDeleteYou are so right. Most of us spend more time complaining about what the government is doing wrong than we do thinking about those who are serving in our military. My husband is a Viet Nam Vet, and they were treated so badly for serving their country. Great post Susan. laurie
ReplyDeleteYou know, I think we all fully agree with the sentiment in your words, it makes me teary just reading it! What a wonderful post - I came by to mention too that I posted something about my southern granny today as you are... southern! LOL have a great week, xJ
ReplyDeleteSusan, Thanks so much for this post. As a Mother of a child in the Navy. It means so much when others take the time to thank him for serving our great Country.

Susan,
ReplyDeleteMy son turns 17 in 9 days and his goal is to join the Air Force upon graduation. My father served in the Navy and many of my Uncles were in many different branches of the Armed Forces. With your permission I'd like to grab your graphics and post this on my blog as well...please let me know.
Blessings to you!
Susan, such a thoughtful post...thank you for reminding us.

I'm so glad you posted this as this is how I feel as well. I've two nephews overseas right now. One in Kosivo and one in Afghanistan. I've also a niece and nephew who did multiple tours in Iraq. We're so grateful to our men/women in the service and their families as well. May God bless them all and those who are in the danger's way, may God bring them home safely.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your day!
What a great post, Susan! And I love our military. They sacrifice so that we might have our freedoms, and I'm eternally grateful for that. They are truly THE BEST! Thanks for this great reminder...
ReplyDeleteXO,
Sheila :-)
You're right! That got me to thinking. For some strange reason I very seldom see anyone in uniform around here. Maybe it's just my particular locale.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Amen! We owe our service men and women sooo much.
ReplyDeleteJe hebt helemaal gelijk. Het zal je kind maar wezen die vecht in een vreemd ver land.
ReplyDeleteWe do, we do! Two of my brothers were in the military. The oldest, Navy and the third, in the Army.
ReplyDeleteThanks for another great reminder Susan! See you tomorrow!
Great post. My mother raised me to always tell a person in uniform thank you. I do it now for much different reasons then I did then. Their commitment to do something I would never think of doing is amazing to me. Plus, they just look so FAB! Why not get some of their attention in return? It's a win/win!
ReplyDeleteThanks Susan,
ReplyDeleteMy husband, father, granfather and father-in law were all in the military. Navy and Air Force, so as they say I am a "Military Brat" and proud to be one. I know my family served their country well...thanks for reminding us to honor those who served. Great Post! Sonia/Miss Bloomers
Great post, Susan! My hubby retired about a year and a half ago after 26 years in the Navy. It is definitely an arduous life these folks have so that we can all be free.
ReplyDeleteSusan,
ReplyDeleteI love this post. We should recognize these brave men and women every chance we get. I am grateful for our freedoms and I know we have our armed forces to thank for them.

Susan,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for reminding us, my father retired from the military and i know first hand what sacrifices these men and their families make. I am so proud of all of our military men and women . I think your idea is super great!! Blessings,
Sue
Hey there! How are you?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder. There is no way we can repay these brave men and women and the least we can do is acknowledge and honor them. Of course we should pray for them as well.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte
Excellent idea! This is a timely reminder for us to also remember to fly our flags for them this Saturday as well. Well done!
ReplyDeleteRobin
I have wanted to do that many times, but at the last minute I get shy! I know... me shy... but I do. But I'll keep trying. Perhaps sometime I'll get the nerve. Silly I know...

Thanks for this posting. Today at Andrew AFB in Md. was an air show. Why do they keep changing the dates for holidays. Memorial Day should always be on May 30th. not other days so government workers can have another day off! CarolinaJewell..let me guess you're near Camp LeJuene or Ft. Bragg?
