At 6:02 on Saturday morning, a tornado, vortex of 110-mph winds, began wailing into a near-three-mile-long strip of northwest Macon. Its swath measured 500 or so yards across at its widest. We were within a mile of it but had no damage at our house.
From just north of Wesleyan College it raced, through tree-lined neighborhoods, across Forest Hill Road and on over in back of a movie house off Northside Drive and a motel on Riverside Drive. Along the way, it ate up some 200 trees.
Four houses were wiped out. Twenty-one others were damaged. The National Weather Service deemed the messes at 10 of the dwellings as “major.”
Many cars were damaged as well. My son’s girlfriend’s car had a tree land on it (but she and her family were okay).

HERE ARE THIS WEEK’S PARTICIPANTS:
That is so scary!!! We were up at 2:30 a.m. here (we're south of Atlanta) hiding in the closet. We could hear the roaring for about 10 seconds and then all quiet. After that, it poured rain for about 2 minutes and it quit. BTW, my husband is from Eastman, you might know where that is.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in an area of SW Missouri, part of tornado alley. These storms never cease to amaze and scare me!
ReplyDeleteI was so sorry to hear about the weekend storms.
We had thunderstorms overnight and now under a tornado watch until 9pm tonight. All the weather conditions are right for tornadoes.
Wow! It is just incredible to see the damage. I have a very hard time imagining what it must be like to have a home one day and then not the next....so glad your family is safe.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Southern Illinois girl ... know all about those twisters. So sorry about all the devastation. Sometimes the clean-up really brings a community together ... but surely there are easier ways to get neighborly, huh??
ReplyDeleteWe are powerless when compared to the power of nature. Where ever we live nature has some surprise for us whether earthquake, fire, flood or rain. I'm glad that you and your family came out OK, I'm sad that others didn't.
ReplyDeleteWow, there was so much damage. It does look scary. I am glad you and your family were safe.
ReplyDeleteSo scary and sad! Glad you and your sons girlfriend are safe!!!
ReplyDeletehi Susan, I am so happy for you that you dodged the tornados. We had them here too, They missed us but my sister, a few miles from me had damage to the outside of her home. We are so thankful nothing major.
ReplyDeleteYour photographs tell the story of the destruction these storms leave in their paths. I'm so sorry for your neighbors and those across the county who were touched in any way by these tornados.
Stay safe.
Easter Blessings

ReplyDeleteThe nature's wrath! So sorry to hear about your neighbors, the pictures really showed much about the devastation.
ReplyDeleteOh my golly! this is indeed scary. Glad to know you guys are safe.
ReplyDeleteThat must be scary to live through, and I'm glad you're ok..
ReplyDeletethat is terrible.how horrible it must have been for all of you..
ReplyDeleteWow! So glad you are ok!
ReplyDeleteWOW. That was some storm. I'm glad that you and yours are okay. We don't have those kind of storms in Arizona but we do have monsoons and sometimes the storms can be just as bad. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHow scary and disastrous.
ReplyDeleteWe're glad you all are safe and hope the ones affected can get their lives back soon.
ReplyDeleteGlad your Okay! Stay safe always.

I have lived through three tornadoes and know they are not to be taken lightly. I am glad your son's gf was not hurt. Awesome shots. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThat is a big devastation, i saw it on TV, and thought that Mother Nature is already giving its wrath on us 'abusers of the earth'. It's good that services in your country reach the needy quickly, unlike in this country! If you have tornadoes, we have typhoons, landslides and sometimes floods. Typhoons are the most common and they normally carry the other calamities. These days of summer, it is the fires which happens so often here, maybe tornadoes and typhoons are better than fires though!
ReplyDeleteHow awful...I am glad you escaped the wrath of Mother Nature at your home. That same storm passed through Mississippi also and did some damage here.
ReplyDeleteOh my! I am so glad you are safe. I didn't realize the storm was so severe. We don't have the greatest news teams here. We usually hear about the weather in the Atlanta area as Bob's brother lives in Austell.
ReplyDeleteI linked up twice by mistake. I came back to leave a comment and my info was still in the link and I thought it didn't take. So sorry. Can I remove one or do you have to do it. Ginger:)
We had SO much damage here in North Carolina; our neighborhood was untouched...but total destruction just 20 miles away. Really terrible...
ReplyDeleteSusan So sorry to hear of the devastation and those gorgeous old trees down.
ReplyDeleteI so wanted to join you today but when I put my info in it comes up with this message[
URL must begin with 'http://'
My URL doesn't look anything like that. Would you be able to link mine for me? Maybe it is my puter-
Glad that you and family are ok. By looking at those damages, it was a big destructive one! Those poor people who are badly affected, its going to take a while to have a normal again...
ReplyDeleteTERRIBLE the destruction of falling trees!
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrifying series of photos. And here I was complaining about some cold and gray weather.
ReplyDeleteThose storms were so terrible with horrible loss of life in some areas. I'm glad you and your family were OK!
ReplyDeleteSuch devastation. So difficult for those that have to deal with it.

Sorry Susan, Ive entered 2 linkys, can you please delete no.44. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI'm happy that we don't have any tornados here.
ReplyDeleteWe can do a lot of things, but the nature have power over us.
I'm glad you and yours are all well. That must have been too close for comfort! We had a very small tornado near here a couple months ago that took out a few houses and businesses. At 10 miles away, it was too close.
ReplyDeleteWow, what sobering images. I'm glad you made it through safely.
ReplyDeleteThat is a lot of damage, glad to hear you and your family are safe. As a former GA girl, one of the few things I don't miss about the south is the tornadoes.
ReplyDeleteHow devastating! Sad to see the photos you've shared.
ReplyDeleteWhat dreadful devastation, thankful that you did not suffer.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about it. That was so scary. I heard about it in the news. Glad you are all safe.
ReplyDeleteWow, your pictures are incredible! I just shared a link to Lowe's free tree offer for Earth Day, but you're going to need a lot more trees than one!
ReplyDeleteHi Susan, your pictures tell the story of the damage a tornado can leave behind in it's path..I have never been through one and hope I don't have to face one.It is too scary for me..I am glad you and your family were safe.. Baba
ReplyDeleteUggg, so scary! Glad you are ok! Those are incredible pictures. Another show of just how strong mother nature is.
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like some really serious damage. Hope everyone is ok. Have a great day!

incrediable pictures...glad all is ok
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, that's quite a sight. Glad everyone is safe.
ReplyDeletewe had storms blow through here as well hope everyone was safe where you are devestation looks great
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you and your family were not injured. We had severe storms move through here last night, tornados headed our way and didn't land here...we got lucky. The weather can be terrifying.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting!
We had similar storms blow through Wisconsin last week, followed by heavy rains and now a dumping of snow. Mother Nature is expressing an opinion for sure. Fortunately around here there were no fatalities although one man was picked up and carried a few hundred feet. Neighbors out helping neighbors reminds us that all is not bad in the world.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you had no damage.
Oh my gosh, Susan......how very scary for everyone!! My prayers go out to those whose homes and families were affected - and I thank God that you are all right. Amazing photos that give me the chills.... ♥

Living in Kansas I know all to well about tornados. I'm so glad you were not hurt and your home is OK. Sorry about the car! We've had pretty good weather here so far.
ReplyDeleteAnn
So glad you and your family are o.k. They are so scary and change lives in minutes. My sister is in Fayetteville, N.C. and their area was hit really hard too. But fortunately she didn't have any damage.
ReplyDeleteI hope that you are doing OK after all of those tornadoes! They calmed down during the night as they (the calmer winds) came through South Carolina and then come daylight and the warmth of the air, they built back up and hit North Carolina. I grew up in Iowa and thought that I'd never see anything like this in the SE!!! Boy, was I wrong! I'm all linked up with a garden post and would also like to wish you a most beautiful Easter and to stop by my blog hop this weekend if you have time. Roz
ReplyDeleteHello Your photos stunned me! I am so glad that you are safe. I never dreamed the Carolinas cold suffer like this from tornados. Have a peaceful week. God Bless. Sunny109
ReplyDeleteTerrible!!!! We had a bad tornado here (Mobile, AL) over a week ago and my friends cousin and 2 of her 3 children were killed. It is so sad. I hate a tornado worse than a hurricane. You can prepare for a hurricane, but have little to no warning for a tornado
ReplyDeleteI have been praying for all the victims of these angry storms! and I pray hard for all of you who live SO CLOSE in the path of these monsters...I am SO HAPPY to hear from you ...Mother Nature is So Angry everywhere! As I garden I look beyond the winters damage and think of all that are struggling and pray for everyone, everywhere... We have made SO MANY Close friends here in Blogville and I worry so about you all...
ReplyDeleteBig Hugs to you,
Donna
