Rose Hill Cemetery was founded in 1840 on 65 acres of land nestled next to the Ocmulgee River on the north side of Macon, GA. The cemetery serves as the final resting place for thousands of people. There are over a thousand confederate soldier graves located in the cemetery; there are also graves for three GA governors, 31 mayors, and several senators/congressmen. Several notable entertainers are buried in the cemetery as well. The cemetery is presently owned and maintained by the City of Macon. The cemetery is both the oldest and the largest of all 33 cemeteries located within the city.

Cemetaries have certainly changed over the years. We have a Rose Hill in our town too. My grandmother taught me how peaceful and interesting a walk in a cemetary can be.

ReplyDeleteI've never been to an old cemetery like that. There is one here that had all wooden headstones (now decayed and mostly gone), but nothing so splendid as this one! Thanks for sharing it with us, hope you have a great week!

I can see this from the highway and have always wondered what it looks like up close. Thanks for sharing all those photos. My husband likes to take photos or old grave stones too. I always think he should volunteer to help maintain those stones.

I love old cemeteries too. We often take walks in them. There are some interesting ones here in SC. Actually my hubby and I used to go on dates in cemeteries over 30 years ago when we lived up North and were first dating!

One of your Macon boys was next to us on the beach. Jason Aldean and his family were right next to us. My son recognized him (I had never heard of him, but had heard his songs) Thanks for letting me join the party!

ReplyDeleteI am a volunteer at a historic National Land-marked cemetery in Brooklyn, NY called Green-Wood Cemetery. I volunteer for the Civil War Veteran project. We have identified more than 3,000 Union andConfederate soldiers buried in the cemetery.

ReplyDeleteSome really wonderful and moving sculptures in some cemetaries. One I saw a long time ago in Lima, Peru had many lifesize statues similar to these.

ReplyDeleteOur church is over 220 years old and is situated IN it's cemetary which now surrounds the old church on three sides. We offer tours of it as there are several Hessian soldiers and Revolutionary soldiers buried here. I loved seeing the pyramid tombstone and the little girl figure.
