Some of my favorite flowering shrubs of summer……. A few shrubs on my list are usually recommended for sunny sites, but all do quite well in shade, some even in full shade. They are all sturdy, widely adaptable plants that resist both diseases and pests. If you have a shade garden, you may wish to add one or more to enhance the beauty of your summer setting.
Glossy abelia
Butterfly bush
Lavender beautyberry
Sweet pepperbush
Oak leaf hydrangea
Virginia Sweetspire
Flowering raspberry

Hi Susan,
ReplyDeletereading your post and looking at all of your lovely flowering shrubs I just realized that except of some hydrangea we don't have any flowering shrubs. Hmmm, I may have to change that now that you showed me many different possibilities.
Thank you for hosting and Happy Outdoor Wednesday,
Tam
Susan, your flowers are gorgeous. I'm wondering why my hydrangea's don't bloom well. In fact in the almost 13 years we've been here, I think I've only seen them bloom once.. wonder what I should do about that. The leaves are just gorgeous.. just no blooms. Thank you for hosting Outdoor Wednesday. I hope this finds you and yours doing well... hugs ~lynne~
ReplyDeleteI have to say beautyberry is one of my all time favorites. Thanks for sharing these beautiful pictures.

What gorgeous flowering shrubs! I need to branch out ... haha -- a pun! I wonder how many of them do okay in our zone here in New Jersey? They are just beautiful-- and so much less fuss than flowering plants! What a show...thanks... Cass

Although I love the hydrangeas, they just don't do well here in the Phoenix area. I can and do have butterfly bush though. I just have to be content with looking at the gorgeous hydrangeas on beautiful blogs like yours!
ReplyDeleteYou have such a great assortment of shrubs. The basic bones are so important in a great garden.
ReplyDeleteSusan, Thanks for hosting this party. All of your shrubs are just beautiful. I love the feathery quality of the Virginia Sweetspire and the oak leaf hydrangea.
ReplyDeleteSue

Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteThese are all very nice flowering shrubs, we've been looking for one that can take full sun that we can use to make a hedge with, without actually having to trim it much!
Btw, Ive been trying to add my name to Mr. Linky but he seems to on the blinky. Hopefully my name won't appear repeatedly later on or something. I hope not!
If it does not appear at all will you please add my link for me. Thanks!

Susan, Thanks for the suggestions, I will plant some of those next year, it is to hard to keep anything new alive this year.
ReplyDeleteHappy Outdoor Wednesday
What beautiful pictures, and I especially love the butterfly bush.
ReplyDeleteSuch pretty flowers! Happy outdoor Wednesday and thanks for being our hostess.
ReplyDeleteSusan, what beautiful pictures. I love the butterfly bush, and am wondering if you have to stake yours. My blooms flop over. While we were on vacation in Maine, I saw a butterfly bush that was over 5 feet tall, and it wasn't flopping over like mine. It was gorgeous! Thanks for being our hostess :-)
ReplyDeleteI love all. Another beautiful blooms!
ReplyDeleteLovely...thank you for hosting Outdoor Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful flowers!
ReplyDeleteAlfazema
Your garden is growing so well that you should have been named Mary, Mary!
ReplyDeleteSo much there to entice the butterflies into a visit! :)

Good morning Susan, your list just keeps growing. We all love our outdoors don't we. Your garden has the most beautiful plants. someday I will have my garden finished. We have only lived here for a little over two years. It is a new home and there was no landscaping. We have done quite a bit, but it is not done yet. We just planted 4 knockout roses. I am so excited to see them bloom. I will be posting them soon. What I love most about your garden is the blooming bushes . That is my idea of gardens. Flowers galore.
ReplyDeleteHave a happy outdoors day.
Hugs...Jeanne
I've always loved the fragrance of the butterfly bush!!!
ReplyDeleteMy Outdoor Wednesday is a 'broken' heart!! Come by and see. :o)
I love the Butterfly Bush and have already planted one here at the new house. Although, it is only about 1 foot tall, it continues to bloom hardily. Thank you for hosting.
ReplyDeleteMama Bear

ReplyDeleteMine's Up!!!
Blessings
Robin
Love the photo of the butterfly bush WITH a butterfly on it!
ReplyDeleteSusan, beautiful showing! Thanks for the weekly party. I got in late this morning, but better late than never! :)
ReplyDeleteWow Susan, what beautiful plants and flowers. I love it. We have such a big piece of property and I think we need more large plants and shrubs, bushes. Your flowers are so pretty. I just love coming here every week and seeing what you will post about your outdoors. I really enjoy this. Have a blessed day.
ReplyDeleteI was so glad to be able to join your fun this week!
Debbie
Susan--If all these are in your yard, it must be a showplace! Each week I love seeing both my favorite plants and plants that are new to me. Thanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteI keep planting butterfly bush every year, but can never get them large enough to survive before the caterpillars demolish them, but as long as they are happy, I'm happy.
ReplyDeleteHappy OW and thanks, as always, for hosting!
Hi Susan
ReplyDeleteYou always find the prettiest flowers! I've enjoyed learning more about them each week on your blog.
Happy OW! Thanks for hosting this event each week!
Hugs, Pat
Susan, thanks for another wonderful Outdoor Wednesday. I am not familiar with some of your beautiful flowers. I wish I could grow things like that, but it is too hot and dry here.
ReplyDeleteLovely flowering bushes with little white blooms would look wonderful against any one of the picket fences on my post today. Let's put our dream worlds together ;-)
ReplyDeleteHi Susan! I just love your garden. I wish mine would look even just half as good as that!!...Christine
ReplyDeletebeautiful shots! I liked them all but I'd have to see if any could survive or thrive in our climate...
ReplyDeleteSusan your flowers are very pretty ♥ I was so confused this morning...I looked and looked for this post (which says it was posted 13 hrs ago) and couldn't find it :0 idk what was wrong with me lol I'm linked in now though :) Happy Outdoor Wednesday ♥
ReplyDeleteAs usual, your flower photos are gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteWhat a DELIGHTFUL array of beautiful flowers! Methinks my Endless Summer Hydrangea doesn't get enough sun anymore now that my lime tree has grow so big ... so it's struggles just to stay alive.
ReplyDeleteHugs and blessings,
So, so pretty. Your bushes. How big is your garden anyway? Happy Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteHi Susan, wow!! you have some great flowers around your house.. I have never seen some of them..just beautiful... hugs, Baba
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea - I love the pictures of the flowers by the way. I love gazania and what a great idea the way they are planted.
ReplyDeleteYour bushes look beautiful, I need some for shady areas, I will have to take a look at these.
ReplyDeleteHi Susan! Great to finally get to visit again! Those flowers are lovely...
ReplyDeleteComputer's on the fritz so I'm busying myself with books. Hope things are getting better on your end.

WOW ! Loving this blog and your pictures are just fantastic - thank you
ReplyDeleteHi Susan!
ReplyDeleteI'm having a 1000 post give away! Swing by and enter...and GOOD LUCK!
I love your flowering shrub pictures. I have blooming plants everywhere and enjoy pampering them...which takes some effort this time of year. I gave up on Oak Leaf Hydrangeas and replaced them with Lime Lights...yours are so healthy. You have the touch or a perfect location...or both.
ReplyDeleteI'm new to blogging, but have certainly enjoyed the Outdoor Wednesday posts I've been following. I hope to join in the fun this week. Your oak leaf hydrangeas are so full of blooms. It is so hot here that nothing looks too perky in my garden!
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting this great event.
