Some of my favorite flowering shrubs of summer……. A few shrubs on my list are usually recommended for sunny sites, but all do quite well in shade, some even in full shade. They are all sturdy, widely adaptable plants that resist both diseases and pests. If you have a shade garden, you may wish to add one or more to enhance the beauty of your summer setting.

Glossy abelia

Butterfly bush

Lavender beautyberry

Sweet pepperbush

Oak leaf hydrangea

Virginia Sweetspire

Flowering raspberry

    Hi Susan,
    reading your post and looking at all of your lovely flowering shrubs I just realized that except of some hydrangea we don't have any flowering shrubs. Hmmm, I may have to change that now that you showed me many different possibilities.

    Susan, your flowers are gorgeous. I'm wondering why my hydrangea's don't bloom well. In fact in the almost 13 years we've been here, I think I've only seen them bloom once.. wonder what I should do about that. The leaves are just gorgeous.. just no blooms.     I love the oakleaf hydrangea. My sister has a couple of big ones and they are so pretty. I also love the butterfly bush.

    What gorgeous flowering shrubs! I need to branch out ... haha -- a pun! I wonder how many of them do okay in our zone here in New Jersey? They are just beautiful-- and so much less fuss than flowering plants! What a show...thanks... Cass

    I have seen so many oak leaf hydrangeas this year. Conditions must be just right.

    Butterfly bushes grow so quickly.
    My Mom has one just off her deck.
    It is so pretty.

    Although I love the hydrangeas, they just don't do well here in the Phoenix area. I can and do have butterfly bush though. I just have to be content with looking at the gorgeous hydrangeas on beautiful blogs like yours!

    Hi Susan,

    These are all very nice flowering shrubs, we've been looking for one that can take full sun that we can use to make a hedge with, without actually having to trim it much!

    Susan, what beautiful pictures. I love the butterfly bush, and am wondering if you have to stake yours. My blooms flop over. While we were on vacation in Maine, I saw a butterfly bush that was over 5 feet tall, and it wasn't flopping over like mine. It was gorgeous! Thanks for being our hostess :-)

    Good morning Susan, your list just keeps growing. We all love our outdoors don't we. Your garden has the most beautiful plants. someday I will have my garden finished. We have only lived here for a little over two years. It is a new home and there was no landscaping. We have done quite a bit, but it is not done yet. We just planted 4 knockout roses. I am so excited to see them bloom. I will be posting them soon. What I love most about your garden is the blooming bushes . That is my idea of gardens. Flowers galore.

    I keep planting butterfly bush every year, but can never get them large enough to survive before the caterpillars demolish them, but as long as they are happy, I'm happy.

    I love your flowering shrub pictures. I have blooming plants everywhere and enjoy pampering them...which takes some effort this time of year. I gave up on Oak Leaf Hydrangeas and replaced them with Lime Lights...yours are so healthy. You have the touch or a perfect location...or both.
