Last weekend I watched the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes” which was filmed in Juliette, Georgia (not too far from me). The 1991 film was directed by John Avnet starring Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson Mary Louise-Parker, Chris O'Donnell and other well knowns. A friend of mine (Kathy, who is a nurse) was an extra in the movie.

Before they filmed the movie….

and a scene from the movie…. (filmed 1991)

and how it looks now…

A building in Juliette was transformed into the Whistle Stop Cafe for the movie.

and a look at the cafe now…

Juliette offers many memories of the movie. There's a train station with a real train that runs through, the church, cemetery with two graves marked with the names of Buddy Threadgood and Ruth Jamison, a grave by the hickory pit that bears the reading of: Here lies Frank Bennet of Valdosta "The secret was in the sauce."

  5. Fried Green Tomatoes was a revelation of a film. Mary Stuart Masterson knocked it out of the ballpark with her performance. The whole cast was really quite outstanding. Thanks for a glimpse into the before and after of things.

  6. Hi Susan,
It's interesting to learn that the movie was filmed in a real town! So often they create these amazing sets that I always wish were real places. How fun that your friend got to take part in the film. That's a fantasy of mine - perhaps when my daughter the future film maker is famous she can put me in one of hers....:)
Thanks for hosting again. Have a great week.

  28. Thanks for this most interesting post about one of my favorite movies. Nice to show people that movie makers can make a lasting impression on a town. I was on the set of Midnight Cowboy with John Travolta and with the crew bought out all the local shops of cowboy hats and boots. What they spent at local eateries and bars was a real boost to their local economy! lol

  32. Movies productions are really something aren't they? They filmed First Blood with Sylvester Stallone in my dad's town. They made a complete fake town with nothing behind the building facades. Very surreal to see it.

  46. I watched Fried Green Tomatoes again last week too. I caught it on Enchore and it sucked me in once again! I have to say, I enjoyed it more this time as a 30 something than I had before - I think I got it a little more this time.

Decemember a year ago, I had the opportunity to eat at The Irondale Cafe in Alabama which The Whistlestop Cafe was patterned after for the book. It was owned by the aunt of the author Fried Green Tomatoes. http://www.irondalecafe.com/Default.aspx And they still serve fried green tomatoes everyday!
