Thursday (April 22) will mark the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, a day that is meant to inspire appreciation for the Earth’s environment. For more information about the history, etc of Earth Day, here is the link to its Wiki .Do you do anything special to acknowledge the day?
I usually use the day as an excuse to plant something new in the yard. I plant items in memory or honor of a friend or family member…. something I can watch grow/bloom and think of that person and smile. I already have my special person (a friend) selected for this year… I just need to go pick something out to plant (I will try to take a picture for next week).
I have actually planted many roses for female family and friends…..David Austin roses for both of my grandmothers….
and also some gardenias…….
For the men… I usually try to go with a tree… such as a crape myrtle……
or a spice bush … (or some other shrub)…..

ReplyDeleteI grew up in Australia, and there were not many 'days' in those days...i don't usually do anything special, but my kids do something every week...i'm going to guess they will continue to do so as they grow older, it seems very much part of the American 'custom'.
i do like the idea of planting something in memory of something or someone special, i will keep that in mind when/if we get around to redoing our garden.

ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely reminder to plant things to honor people. I saw a wonderful meditation garden with a huge tubular bells chime and other garden music items, planted with favorite plants of the gardener's mother. One day I will do the same for my mother.

ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, David Austen roses just completely make me swoon. Is there anything so beautiful? (Well, maybe peonies, but that's another story.)
ReplyDeleteIf the local deer didn't DEVOUR every rose in the yard, I'd have some of those Austens -- they are amazing.
Gorgeous pictures!

How wonderful that you also think of planting a flower or tree in honor of someone special. Flowers and gardens were so important to my nana and she passed her love and appreciation on to me. For Mother's Day last year, I sent my mom three (one to represent each of us nana, mom, and me)David Austen roses - Crown Princess Margareta. Not only were they gorgeous, but nana's name was Margareta. So now my mom has them planted together in a special spot in her garden. I'm ordering three for my own garden this year. I enjoy reading your blog. Thank you so much for sharing and for such a great post.
