At 6:02 on Saturday morning, a tornado, vortex of 110-mph winds, began wailing into a near-three-mile-long strip of northwest Macon. Its swath measured 500 or so yards across at its widest. We were within a mile of it but had no damage at our house.
From just north of Wesleyan College it raced, through tree-lined neighborhoods, across Forest Hill Road and on over in back of a movie house off Northside Drive and a motel on Riverside Drive. Along the way, it ate up some 200 trees.
Four houses were wiped out. Twenty-one others were damaged. The National Weather Service deemed the messes at 10 of the dwellings as “major.”
Many cars were damaged as well. My son’s girlfriend’s car had a tree land on it (but she and her family were okay).
